Create Safe, Healthy & Sustaining Learning Environments

This video explains how educators can create a safe, healthy, and sustaining learning environment.

Impact of Socioeconomic Status on Academic Success

This video discusses the comparison of child development at young ages of children from low SES backgrounds compared to high. The students from the low SES backgrounds may have parents that spend less time with them, went to poor quality childcare, and have lower expectations. There is an achievement gap between the socioeconomic statuses and those who have the better resources and come from higher statuses have a better success rate in the classroom as well as in the workplace. It is important for educators to ensure they are providing equal opportunity for all students in all backgrounds.

Schools & Social Inequality: Crash Course Sociology #41

This video expresses the ideas of how funding and socioeconomic status relates to social aspects and success of students in the education system. Schools that have students with lower socioeconomic backgrounds tend to have less funding than schools with higher socioeconomic backgrounds. Students with a lower socioeconomic background tend to have less overall success in education than those with higher socioeconomic status. This begins from a young age because students who come from a family with higher income tend to have parents who spend more time with them at a young age. An example presented in the video is that parents tend to read books to their children more if they are from a higher socioeconomic background. Students who are minorities or come from a lower socioeconomic background may have a more difficult time applying for college and winning awards and scholarships. The video goes into talking about how race, gender, and disabilities can play a factor in disadvantages that students may have in the classroom.

The “opportunity gap” in US public education – and how to close it

This video talks about the importance of fixing schools for the students. When comparing districts, the speaker, pointed out that the white districts received way more money than the non-white students even though they have the same number of students. Many non-white districts have poorer quality tools within their school and poorer quality teachers. A child’s academic success should not be predetermined by their backgrounds and neighborhoods they grow up in. Educational system should narrow the gap and create opportunities for all children despite their upbringings.
